Waimea Plantation Cottages

My brother's wedding was held down at Waimea Plantation Cotttages, right on the ocean at Waimea Beach, which is almost-black sand. It's more brown, really. Even though swimming is not a good idea (the dark sand makes the water brown and prone to sharks), it was still lovely to be by the sea. We rented one of the big houses there and had the wedding out on the lawn.

Walking out on Waimea Pier:

The black (brown) sand beach is littered with stark branches of driftwood:

The lawn was completely shaded by an ancient banyan tree, which looked like a jungle all by itself:

Tables out on the lawn, surrounded by tiki torches:

The inside of our historical house was decorated in Hawaiiana style:

My bedroom window looked out on the Pacific Ocean, and it was so wonderful listening to the waves as I fell asleep:

A cool lamp filled with seashells:

Opening the doors to lanai created a sense of indoor/outdoor living:

The kitchen was sunny and bright:

The setting was just perfect for the wedding:

And when you needed to get away for a bit, relaxing in one of the seaside hammocks was a great idea:

Seaside Horses

Thank you for all of your support during the HubPages contest! Even though my article didn't win, it was chosen for Hub of the Day this past Sunday. I had a lot of fun participating and hearing from new readers. Without readers, what's the point of writing? I appreciate all of my readers here and always love to read your comments - thank you :)

My photos have been stacking up, and I was going to stuff them into one post, but changed my mind. I'm feeling a little wordless anyhow, so I'll just let the photos speak for themselves.

I met a few new friends recently. They live in a large hillside pasture overlooking a 180 degree view of the sea.

These beautiful horses of Hawaii are reddish from the dirt, and they love to eat the buffalo grass that grows on the other side of the fence.

I was very excited to see the new foals with their spindly legs and fuzzy coats.

Like most little girls, I was once obsessed with horses. Marguerite Henry books filled my shelves, and I had a complete stable of miniature horses that I regularly exercised on the carpeted track. I think a bit of that horse-love is still hidden somewhere inside me, because something makes me want to hug every horse I see.

Eastside Beach Town

I recently had a quite a bit of time to kill one day so I thought I'd explore a small seaside town on the east coast of the island. Even though an island by its very definition is isolated and limited, I find that there's always something new to discover, some road never traveled. And though I've been in this town a thousand times, I still managed to find new things about it. This is the backdoor perspective, empty lots and rusty roofs included. Disorder and imperfection, beauty beneath a blue beaming sky.

Surfboards can be strapped to any kind of vehicle...

Shee thin...

Something's rather beautiful and mysterious about this falling down house...

Cinder block house...

Rusting right into the ground...

Mower and Marine...

An Asian mural inside the Dragon Building...

A cute cafe stuffed between buildings..

Hundreds of orchids and all different...

Empty lot...

Fruit stand...

These are sold all over the place, but I still can't figure out what they're supposed to be...

Tower of lumber...

Untouched beauty...

The clearest water...
